Start from scratch, with no partner or experience: Introduction group, Mondays 18:00, with Argentine maestro Luciano Blanco.
Who it’s for
That is perfectly normal: most of our Introduction students had never danced tango before. You start from lesson one.
You can come on your own. In class everyone dances with everyone, and we keep the group balanced.
Tango is a dance that crosses generations and cultures: we have students of all ages and from many countries.
The programme
Argentine tango isn’t difficult: it has its own method, its pillars and its stages. We teach them to you in order, as in Buenos Aires.
The basis of it all: how to embrace, hold yourself and connect with your partner.
Walking is the first step in tango, and the one you work on most.
Ochos, giros and salidas, so you can start combining them.
Tango, milonga and vals: recognising the beat and dancing to it.
People thinking about taking up a dance sometimes believe Argentine tango will be too difficult, or that it is a very complex dance. The truth is that once they make up their minds to start our Tango for Beginners classes, they are pleased to discover that what seemed out of reach really isn’t, and sooner than they expected, they are dancing and enjoying it.
Argentine tango is a popular dance, born spontaneously on the outskirts of Buenos Aires: simply embracing, walking and dancing to the young music that was taking shape. Of course, over time the dance and its music developed and grew, and styles and schools forged the ways of dancing and playing what the world now knows as Argentine Tango. Tango Academies have managed to systematise the teaching of a dance that was born spontaneously in the suburbs, but they have done so through a teaching system designed to make learning easier and put it within everyone’s reach.
Argentine tango is not only a popular dance, it is also an intergenerational one. Our grandparents danced it, our parents danced it, and now we do. There is no age limit for tango. Anyone can dance it and start learning, whether young, middle-aged or older. Our classes have students of all ages, and tango is accessible to everyone. And while some couples come to class, you can also come on your own. Many students come without a partner, and we try to keep a good balance between men and women in class so that everyone can practise comfortably.
So you don’t need any previous experience to dance tango. It doesn’t matter if you have never danced at all, or if you have never taken up a leisure activity and this is your first. On the contrary, that is the norm. Many students who are not drawn to other dances are drawn to tango, and it becomes the first and only dance they learn. Others have tried other dances and finally come to the sensuality, elegance and passion of Argentine tango.
In other words, starting to dance Argentine tango is neither more nor less difficult than other dances or disciplines. As with any dance or discipline, when the teaching has a proper method and the right techniques, dance, and tango in particular, becomes just another pastime that, with practice, grows on you like a new language and a new way of moving.
What is true is that, given its complexity and its particular nature, it is important to start learning tango with people who can pass on, first-hand, what makes the quintessential Argentine dance unique. Disciplines such as sport dance or ballroom dancing often give some notions or an introduction to tango, taking an element of Argentine tango and making it their own, but they are far removed from its teaching method and from Argentine tango itself. The same goes for approaches by people trained in other dances, such as contemporary or classical, whose basic technique is different from, and sometimes opposite to, the technique on which Argentine tango is built. That is why it is best to learn from those of us who have lived and breathed tango at its source: real Argentine tango.
In short, Argentine tango is not difficult, it is simple, but like every dance it has its own teaching method, its pillars and its stages, which make your practice time worthwhile so that you see good results class after class while having a good time and enjoying yourself.
At our Academy, with more than twenty years of experience teaching tango in Argentina and in Europe, we have designed a programme and a method that optimise and speed up learning, focused on what we have defined as the most important pillars of tango as a dance, while respecting its genuine character, the one our old Argentine maestros passed on to us. The tango of Buenos Aires.
With us, you can learn as in Buenos Aires, here in Valencia. Step by step, in an orderly, systematic way, covering every pillar of the dance, not only the choreographic one. However you choose to combine our regular classes, intensive classes or private lessons, you will go at your own pace, with personal follow-up of your learning, and each class will build perfectly on the one before, bringing together tango’s own body technique, its choreographic foundations and musicality. Little by little, as your time allows, you will develop an elegant, rich and striking tango that you will love dancing, and that others will love dancing with you, wherever Argentine tango is danced. If you have already learned some tango, we will put everything you know to good use and build on it, adapting it to our system, so that you start from where you are, keep adding the technical content your dance is missing and continue to progress.
Go on, start with us and experience the tango of Buenos Aires first-hand, as we teach it in Argentina, but here in Valencia. We look forward to seeing you.
